Perfect world

Uh the reason why I am late on this blog is because I really cant figure out what a perfect world would be. I think that there will always be someone that has a problem or a situation that someone would have. I would think that people that are God feared, loving, and helpful, would make the world great. But class is over so I have to get out of here and study. I had a great time on Friday, and lets still HANG OUT...Until then See you at GREEK WEEK!!!!!!!!!!

Strengths

What are the strengths of your chapter and in what ways does your chapter need to improve?

The strengths that my chapter posses is good characters within the frat, a great brotherhood, and great services for the community. Every fraternity posses certain qualities, but some chapters do not represent their organizations as well as others. Kappa Alpha Psi has had programs, events, service, etc. We are all about helping the community change. NOW just like every chapter has Ups, they also have downs. I first off do not want to down any brother in my fraternity so I will speak in general from past years in my fraternity, most of these downs are a lot of other organizations falls as well.
Some of the things that we need to improve on is the lack of participation with some of the members. That is a big problem I have with members in organizations. Why would you go through a "intake process" whether it is a weekend retreat with your members, learning history about the organization, or paying for membership. That all takes money and time, so why not use it to the best of your ability? I hate to see "T-Shirt wearer" or a "skater" on campus. What is a "T-shirt wearer" and a Skater you ask? A T-shirt wear is a person that just comes to the social events to wear your letters. Haven't put no time in working within the frat or sorority, but would be the first one at a party,or in a picture. A Skater is basically the same thing, but always finds a way to get out of WORK!!! If some one needs a member to do something for a program or an upcoming event, the "Skater" will always be busy and unable to help with the program or event. That is something that EVERYONE needs to improve on, doesn't matter what council your in, we all have them. If we care more about our selection process of these members and focus on their work ethic in books, as well as the community it might be able to weed most but NOT all of the skaters out. Another thing that I feel like my organization has a problem with for years is protocol. Men have a certain pride and at times and do not want to listen to people that are in the higher positions because they feel that they are on the same level as their brothers. It is very hard to penalize members in a fraternity.

What are the strengths of your council and in what ways does your council need to change?

The strengths for my council has grown ALOT since I have been a part of NPHC. Me and Leo are the oldest (initiation date) on the council, I have seen 4 different council exec boards so far and I would have to say that we have improved greatly and this is probably the most efficient exec board so far from my knowledge. We are starting to get a lot of things in order such as the by-laws, and Constitution. A good thing about our NPHC exec board, we all know what is missing and what needs to be changed in our council and we are willing to put time (which we have so far) in to help change it. I feel one of our challenges in our council is outsiders. A lot people including administrators, peers, and other frats sororities do not understand us at all. People just look at us as dangerous black "groups" that can entertain people with step shows and strolls. THAT IS NOT THE CASE! as everyone in this class knows ; NPHC is definitely not that at all. I feel like at times OSU is going to take our Greek culture and our organizations away from us. Hopefully that's not the case, but this I would say would be the hardest fall that we need to improve.

What are the strengths of our community and in what ways does our community need to change?

This is probly the hardest question our of the three. I feel like we can only change our community so much. When one person is helping to fix the world, there is always 2 different people trying to destroy it; and that's the problem. Maybe we can help our Campus community better, but as far as the outside commuinty who doesn't understand greek life or college life at that, it would be a greater challege to change them. The only strength I feel our community has is school pride. Everyone loves being a Buckeye, but when it comes a time to support certain events or programs, it seems to be lost. So sorry I do not have a good answer to this question but maybe someone can comment on this and give me some ideas of the strength and weaknesses of our community.

All most over

Hey Im just at my internship just chilling reading over some stuff, and I just realized WI qrt is almost over. For the most part I am excited because I HATE the cold and I tend to be real lazy around this time (Like a Bear), but on another note I have grown to like this class in a way. I think after the conference, I was able to really have conversations with people in other councils that I never got the chance to do in or outside of class. After the conference I was more comfortable talking and participating in class with the other organizations. YYYYEEEAAAA!!!! LOL

But I just wanted to say that I like this class. It's pretty interesting, even though some stuff is still lame and I still do not got the hang of this blog crap. I'm glad I had the oppertunity to be apart of my Exec Board on my council and to show the other councils that we are not all about Stepping and Strolling but business as well. I feel like I will take more out of this class because of the activities more than the literature and paper work. So I hope we all get good Grades in this class, because it would suck to do all this and still get a bad grade, since it's hard to grade everything :( LOL

OATH

(Merriam-Websters Online Dictionary) an oath is:

: a solemn usually formal calling upon God or a god to witness to the truth of what one says or to witness that one sincerely intends to do what one says (2) : a solemn attestation of the truth or inviolability of one's words b : something (as a promise) corroborated by an oath.

Everyone takes some kind of oath. Marriages, Pledges, certain job positions, membership of organizations (gangs), and government courts. While being a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, I have taken oaths that I stand by highly. I promise to work hard for my fraternity for the rest of my life. I knew that I was making a life long commitment during my initiation process and that is why my fraternity is so special to me. Many are very dishonest about the oaths they make. Witnesses in court has to pledge a oath before confession, and at times people lie all the time.

I'm not sure what we are suppose to talk about in this blog besides the word "Oath", But I believe a oath should be very important to an individual. An Oath is your word, and most of the time that's all you have. At God's witness.

How I feel about Secret Rituals....

I beleive a Secret Ritual is suppose to be kept a secret, or it would not be important for Organization. There are many ceremonies that my Fraternity does, but that is what makes us different from every other organization. A secret Ritual is something that has been passed down member to member ONLY IN YOUR ORGANIZATION! These cememonies or rituals are something every member should keep to them selves and cherish for the rest of their lives. A ritual to me is a something that you should be able to live by. It is something that teaches you a leasson for life in the real world.

Every Organization (Not Just Greek) has a form of rituals, some are only for their members, some are for the public. For instance, I'm sure that Presidents and anyone with higher "power" are involved in certain things that they have to keep to themselves. Athletes, Boss's of a company, Union workers, etc. all have some form of ritual that is only known by them and the ones acciosiated with that person.

People tend to get Rituals and Values mixed up. I can only speak for NPHC but each organization for the most part does things differently for certain reasons. Although we were all founded on the same principals, each organization has to stand out or we would all look the same. Some of my Fratenity values consist of God, Family, Frat, Achievement, and Brotherhood. Now I can say these things, because a lot of us Greeks have the same values. Now if it is something that I know would make us different than others, of course that would be a secret. I keep my rituals deep in my heart because that's what I was taught, which makes my Fraternity so strong. Our "secret Rituals" is what Bonds us together

last week

Hey Yall,

I've have been going through a lot this week and I was so confused why class was cancelled last week. I realized class is just moved! I've been out of a phone for a week last week, and didn't realize it was moved...Guess I need to start looking at my email more. I was told we did some surveys outside fraternity and sorority houses asking then their values and their organizations top 3 activities. I also understood that every council was competing against eachother to see who would receive the most points. I called some people from different councils this week to ask their main activities and values. Every council is different, I feel NPHC has a tight nitch with one another. There's a strong bond on a brotherly/sisterly level that many councils do not have. I also know we have flaws in other areas, such as grades. Not every organization has bad grades, but that is something we really need to improve on!

Some organizations said they are more about studying, some said partying, and some said service. Not every Greek organization is going to be the same and I feel that Tyler is trying to get us to understand that. I think Tyler had everyone do this competition so we can all be brought together. No matter what kind of competition, there is always team work involved, plus everyone hates to lose, so people are forced to work together to win. I'm sure I got the idea of last weeks class and once again I apologize for my absence. Maggie and Tyler are very understanding, so hopefully this blog will be decent. See you all soon..in the new class room

My Values!!!

"What are your values and how do they define you? Where do they fit in terms of your council's values? In terms of the community's values?"

Values are very important to me, as you see on my profile I have several pictures that shaped me to who I am today. The biggest picture is my twin brother Tarron. He is 5 minutes older than me, and really takes that 5 minutes to consideration. Like I said before I am the youngest out of 5 and I believe my family is shaped me who I am today. Family is very important to me. I do not see them as much, but when ever we have time, we kick it like we use to when we were young. My mother took care of us, for the most part by herself. She is a very strong women that fought hard to raise me and my sibling up the right way. Another value that shapes me who I am is GOD. With out him, I would have anything that I have now. I am not living great, but I am still blessed because I could be living worse than I am now.
My Fraternity is another Key thing in my life right now. I have been in the Fraternity for almost 2 years, and because I have witnessed so many things that I possibly would not have witnessed if I wasn't in a Frat, it has made me grow better as person, and as a man. I have worked hard in so many ways for this fraternity and I have benefited from it tremendously.
One that is getting to be a value in my life is love. I have been in my relationship since my freshmen year of college. Her name is Kayla and she is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. We have been through our ups and our downs, but in the long run, it has shaped us in so many ways. I have traveled the country and experienced so many things with this lady and I can truly say that she has made me a better person.
I feel like most of my values represents a lot of the members in my council already; God, Family, Fraternity. I feel like if we can work on ourselves first and realize why we joined a organization, we would be able to shape our council in so many ways. For example, all of us on our Ex Board for our council has committed to help and better our council and community as a hole, and I believe that it will take a lot of time, but we can only move forward.

MLK Day

I was so glad people went out and did service for MLK Day. I actually performed spiritual miming at the Kings Art Complex on Monday. Spiritual Miming is not the same as the people that act like their pulling ropes and being trapped in boxes. A Gospel song is played and we express ourselves with movements and facial expressions. It was very nice and I was blessed that I have the opportunity to express my love for God and to represent while celebrating a great man; Martin Luther King Jr. Its hard to fathom that everyone does not enjoy giving back or doing services for others. Some people just like MLK day because school is out, but that is not the reason why it's a holiday. Martin Luther King Jr. was true leader! With his leadership he was able to lead people to gain their rights as citizens. He wanted peace in the world, no matter what color or creed you were. He was killed for fighting in something he passionately believed in, and because he took that risk and did not care about himself but more about his people; that made him a great leader!

Book of Eli

"The book of Eli" is about a man (Denzel Washington)that has a book that will bring power to the world that is distroyed by previous wars. His mission is to go west and to put it in the right hands, no matter what or who gets in his way. I personally wasn't to fond of the movie. It was ok, I give it a 7 out of 10. The story is good I guess, but I just thought it could have been better. The action scenes are pretty good. It actually looks like Denzel Old's self is doing stunts, but very doubtful. You should check it out....and let me know what you think!

Assignment #2

Why did we choose to start a class about Fraternal Change with a service project, and what did you learn about yourself and your peers as a result of our shared experience today?

First off I came to class late, because I was trying to find parking so my apologies for that. When I seen "Pay It Foward" on the Screen, I thought we were just about to watch the whole movie, so I was pretty excited about that.lol After the clip went off I realized what the bags next to me were; Peanut Butter and Jelly! How exciting!!! Actually I HATE Peanut Butter and Jelly, because I'm allergic to Peanuts. Thank God gloves were available. Me and my Partner Zack made a little Chain where I did the Jelly and he did the PB and we just put it together. We actually worked pretty fast together. Finshed almost 2 loafs. I feel that last Friday's class really showed us how easy it is to give back, even if its little things like PB&J sandwiches. Service is what a lot of our, if not all of our Organizations were based for. To give back to the community and to make a difference with not only the people around us but within ourselves.

I believe that we started our first class about Faternal Change is because I think you believe we are not doing a lot in our commmunity or that you see a lot of potential in us, but we are not taking the time to find it with in us. So I guess we'll see what we will do next. I would really like if we work together and do some to help Haiti. In some form..

Life

So I am at my Internship at the moment..has nothing to do with anything but I might as well share. I intern for The Ohio Public Defender's and within that I work with 9 Criminal Investigators. I love it so far!!! This is really the only good thing thats going for me right now..THIS WEEK HAS BEEN CRAZY!!!!!!!! To much to discuss, but I have been going through a lot and I just need prayer thanks.

Who am I and Why I joined a Frat.

Who is Terry Williams? I would think that I am a lovable guy. I am funny, caring, and over all just a good guy. I am a twin and the youngest of 5 children, Which means I can complain and be a little spoiled at times. Ever since I have been in High School, I have been looked up to as a role model and that is one of the reasons why I wanted to join a Fraternity. I have 3 little nephews that look up to me a lot. Ever since I became a Kappa, they are always imitating me and that is a great feeling. I am person that loves to leave things behind and to set legacy's. So because I am the first person in my family to attend college and to join a Fraternity, I have already set goals for my other family members, which I excited for them to grow up and to achieve these goals.

How do I feel about this class right now? Confused! I have never did a blog before and I am hoping that I did this right. As far as the class, I am not to happy about it but I am trying to be optimistic about it. I really do not have time to have a later class in the day and I feel like small retreats can help all of us unify instead of taking this class that has nothing to do with my major..But like I said I'm going to see how this will be and I will get back to you.
